A lot of music fans will look back at the 1980s decade with fondness. The birth of MTV and the breakthrough of some of the biggest names in pop today were riding the airwaves and our screens with catchy pop videos to boot and, who can forget Live Aid?
Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Queen are just three acts who were hardly ever off our screens and radio airwaves. One such group at the tail end of that era was Then Jerico. Recently we caught up with their lead singer Mark Shaw to ask him about what he remembers about the 1980s.

Excellent response to THEN JERICO’s appearance @ THE GATHERING
Featured
The reaction to THEN JERICO’s ‘special guest’ appearance at THE ALARM’S GATHERING 2019 on Facebook & Twitter etc has been overwhelming.
Mark had this to say: “Thank you all for being a fantastic audience! I loved it and I’m so proud of – and deeply grateful to – my amazing Then Jerico collaborators #RyanWilliams, #PaulDavis, #MagnusBox . Each of them unique, immensely talented, technically gifted, sexy, anc creatively astonishing musicians who play their hearts out and belt out Then Jerico songs with raw energy, melodic finesse and phenomenal power. I love ‘em. Thank you Gents you’re Fuckin’ rock stars to a man.! And a huge Thank You to #HazelPethick and #Anita for being SO helpful and incredibly loyal and patient! I truly appreciate it. We couldn’t have done it without you. God love you both. And last but by no means least, My Love and Thanks and Total Respect to #MikePeters #JulesPeters #Smiley #JamesStevenson #AndyLebrow #DavePeters and everyone in #MPO and #ShowSec for a truly beautiful and spiritual experience at #TheGetheringWales ! I love y’all and I’m honoured touched and humbled to have been invited to play at such a legendary event with as Special Guests with such an excellent band and such an accomplished songwriter and and rock singer as #MikePeters.
The band were sensational but Mike was on top form. I couldn’t even lace his boots. The man can rock like no-one I’ve ever seen. It was a privilege and an education in showmanship and sheer balls-to-the-wall punk goth rock visceral energy and genuine passion. What a voice, what a band #JulesPeters #Smiley #JamesStevenson.
Thank you for your generosity and love, my head’s still spinning and my heart is singing. Xx
Then Jerico confirmed as very special guests for The Gathering on Saturday February 2nd
Featured
Then Jerico are confirmed to appear as very special guests at this year’s Alarm Gathering, and will appear on Saturday February 2nd. (Tickets available here).
Then Jerico who are fronted by the charismatic Mark Shaw, also played with The Alarm at the Forum in London last year and left a deep impression with Alarm fans. There was a lot of favourable social media chatter and repeated requests for the band to play again with The Alarm. So much so, that the MPO Team is delighted to confirm that Then Jerico are now booked to play.
Then Jerico is a British rock band formed by singer Mark Shaw, who first found fame in 1987 with the release of their debut album ‘First (The Sound Of Music)‘. The record featured hit singles ‘Muscle Deep‘ and ‘The Motive‘ which remained in the UK Top 40 chart for three months, becoming the most-played record on BBC Radio 1 in 1987. The album brought Then Jerico worldwide recognition and saw them selling-out headline shows along with support tours with Iggy Pop and Propaganda, amongst others.
Their follow-up album, ‘The Big Area‘, cemented their status, by going on to sell over 100,000 copies within the first 40 minutes of its release, ‘The Big Area‘ immediately attained Gold status and reached number 4 in the UK Albums Chart. The title track and single Big Area was a huge radio and club hit throughout Europe, peaking at number 13 in the UK Singles Chart.
“I’m really looking forward to welcoming Mark Shaw and Then Jerico to The Gathering”, said a recently honoured Mike Peters MBE. “I’ve met and performed with the band on a couple of occasions, and they always give everything they have got. Mark is an engaging performer and singer who literally throws himself into each performance. I’m sure all The Alarm fans will give Then Jerico a huge reception on the Saturday night. It promises to be an incredible evening of music

Mark Shaw covers Bowie’s ‘Golden Years’ for new movie…
Featured
Mark Shaw attended the premiere of fantastic new British comedy film ‘Golden Years’ by Moli Films on April 14h at Tottenham Court Road Odeon [watch trailer here.] starring a truly stellar British cast including Bernard Hill, Virginia McKenna, Simon Callow, Alun Armstrong, Sue Johnston, Una Stubbs, Philip Davis, Brad Moore, Mark Williams and, Ellen Thomas.
The event was in aid of one of Mark’s favourite charities – The Born Free Foundation – who he has played and supported for 25 years under the brilliant leadership of the wonderful Virginia McKenna (who founded the Born Free Foundation with her husband Bill Travers) and for the last half-century has run it with her son, the president Will Travers.
For the last year Mark Shaw has been working on the film as Music Supervisor Consultant and, is proud and privileged to have done so.
“The film has an essential social message at its core – one to which I believe we should all pay heed and, it’s an important tale that needed telling as well as being a unique and hilarious new comedy. But as a British independant film, we of course had a very limited budget – which didn’t quite stretch to cover the cost of a license to use David Bowie’s original recording of his classic song ‘Golden Years’. And so, with a few close collaborators including Dee Ral, Clifford Slapper and my mates in Then Jerico including PJ Phillips and John Miller and, with the help and support of my amazing wife Laura, I’ve recorded a new version of the track under license from Sony Music. I produced the track, sang the vocal and mixed the track with my dear friends Moke Bennett and Pete Booker.”
We will be previewing Mark Shaw’s version of David Bowie’s ‘Golden Years’ here and, the Mark Shaw:ThenJerico facebook page when the film is released on 29th April 2016…

Drummer Steve Wren to miss tour…
Featured
Rockers Then Jerico are about to head out on their ‘Reprise’ Tour on 7th May (in Aberdeen) but sadly without original drummer Steve Wren.
Steve will miss the band’s tour as he stays at home in New Zealand to look after his wife who is recovering from a major operation.
Remaining original members, lead vocalist Mark Shaw, guitarist Rob Downes, bassist Jasper Stainthorpe and guitarist Scott Taylor are taking to the road again for 13 dates around the UK taking in (amongst others) Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Hull, Cardiff and culminating in a gig at the legendary Clapham Grand in London. They will be joined by friend of the band, drummer John Miller who has in the past played with Mark Shaw and also St Etienne, Suggs, Chris Helme, Gabrielle and Bernard Butler.
As Mark says: “We are really sorry to have to announce to fans that our mate and original drummer Steve can’t make it over here for the tour. He is as gutted as us to miss out on the tour but we know he will be with us in spirit. We may even try to Skype a call to him from the show so he won’t miss out! We all wish him and his family all the best and hope to have him back with us on the next tour!”
Please respect Steve’s and the band’s privacy over this personal matter.

Then Jerico @ Rewind Festival
Featured
Then Jerico’s Mark Shaw & Scott Taylor will be appearing on Saturday 17th August @ this year’s REWIND FESTIVAL (Henley)
Citing Duke Ellington, Scott Walker, The Rolling Stones and fellow Rewind artist Cockney Rebel amongst his influences, Mark Shaw formed Then Jerico in 1983 via an advert in Melody Maker and signed to London Records (FFRR) in 1984.
After two years of constant touring the group released their debut album “First” in 1986, which included the hit single ‘The Motive’ which remained in the UK Top 40 chart for three months, becoming the most-played record on BBC Radio 1 in 1987 and bringing Jerico worldwide recognition.
“Let Her Fall” and “Muscle Deep” also featured on the album, the latter being banned by Radio 1 due to its political subject matter – Apartheid. Nevertheless the band continued to tour the world with the “Artist Against Apartheid” banner and in 1989 released their classic gold status album “The Big Area” which featured singles ‘Sugarbox’, “What Does It Take?” (featuring another Rewind artist Belinda Carlisle) and their biggest hit single, title track “Big Area”.
Following a successful solo career in the 90s and 00s, Mark Shaw reunited Then Jerico for a UK reunion tour in September 2012 to such success they hit the road again in May 2013 with their ‘Reprise’ Tour stopping at Rewind Festival along the way.
A new compilation album ‘Reprise’ is out on Warner / Rhino Music soon…

getreadytorock.me.uk reviews The Big Area (Rhino/Warners)
Featured
Then Jerico – The Big Area (Rhino/Warner)
Then Jerico is a pop rock outfit hailing from the 80’s and “The Big Area”, the band’s second album, is one of the fastest selling albums on the day of its release (1989), moving 100000 copies in 40 minutes! The band has reunited and plans to play the album on tour in its entirety…
The album has been difficult to obtain for a number of years and it finally sees a re-release. It still sounds remarkable and is well worth listening to, 23 years later. Sadly, with all the Deluxe Editions hitting the shelves, it is disappointing not to see “The Big Area” get similar treatment…
Still a fine album and one which the younger generation should pick up and listen to.

Acoustic Review (Fiona Middleton)
Featured
Sooooooo….almost 24 hours ago I was making my way to the final gig of the Then Jerico Big Area tour…this was always going to be emotional. The acoustic gig to round off an amazing 2 weeks of O2 Academy arena dates. Having been to 3 of those, I was looking forward to the intimacy of this “farewell for now” to the fans.
In contrast to the stomping, full on, sometimes fever pitch atmosphere of the Academy’s, the Bedford saw the TJ boys in a much more laid back, chilled environment. Very relaxed. Fans were seated. Up close and personal is an understatement. Everybody in the venue seemed within touching distance of the stage. Really could not have been any more intimate. The feeling was that the boys on stage were loving that just as much as we were!
This was the first time the TJ boys had done this acoustic set, but you would never have known, judging by the opening “Let Her Fall”. It was gorgeous. Softer, of course, but still as rousing….and gave us a flavour of what was to come. Mark N Rob, Jasper, Steve and Scott proceeded to keep us rocking with some more “First – The Sound Of Music” favourites, including a crowd pleasing Hitcher. They then moved on to the Big Area album.
From my seat, I’d had a sneak peek at the set list laying on stage (yes, we were ALL that close -lol!) …to discover Sugar Box was 11th down the list. Couldn’t miss that! So 4th song in was when I went to get a round in, in the adjoining pub. Approx four minutes later, with beer in one hand and Jack Daniels in the other, I walked back into the theatre to find tears down faces and Mark whispering out the last “Sugar Box” of this beloved song into his mic. Those naughty boys had played with order of play. Rebels! Rock and roll! LOL.
You can’t ask a die hard TJ fan what their favourite song is – there are too many. But for me, Play Dead was an absolute rare treat. Darkest Hour was outstanding. But Big Area…this acoustic, stripped down, haunting version, saw Mark and Rob quietly bringing some of the audience to tears once more. Never imagined this iconic, stomping rock song, could ever sound like that. And I can’t wait for the DVD to come out to those fans who couldn’t make it. It’s a truly beautiful version. Half way through, the boys pumped it back up to full throttle for the fans to sing along loud and proud and partake of some air punching.
As with the previous gigs, Mark, Scott, Steve, Rob and Jasper gave us a rousing Reeling. Oooohhhh YEAH baby!
At the risk of being cheesy (to go with crackers) there was a buzz on the stage between the boys. Lots of love and affection there. Great to see. But also, between the fans and the boys.
The arena gigs were brilliant, but this intimate one was a real treat on so many levels. For the fans, a one off.
Come back boys! Let’s do this again some time. What a brilliant fortnight. What a brilliant band. Never thought I’d see this again – all these great songs live. Absolutely superb. I won’t forget it.

The O2 Academy in Sheffield provided an intimate setting for the return of Then Jerico. The gig was one of a series of eight shows by the band at O2 Academy venues across the country, to mark the 25th anniversary and digital re-release of their debut album ‘First (The Sound of Music)’. All of the original band members have reunited for the first time since 1990 for this tour. Then Jerico: Debut Acoustic Live Performance 3rd October, London
Featured
*Important Announcement*
As requested a ‘PAY AT THE DOOR’ option has now been made available for tonights performance.
Show Details:
Doors will open at 7.00/7.30pm and the venue closes at 11pm, although the adjacent bar is open from 5pm until midnight!
The Bedford is a really atmospheric, intimate venue, perfect for filming, with excellent nearby transport links to the Northern line tube and Balham main-line train station and buses; which are just a few of the reasons why TJ have chosen to play there as the final show of the TJ reunion tour 2012.
There is a bar and food available both in the theatre and in the adjacent rock ‘n’ roll bar, and there are tables and seating downstairs – although these cannot be reserved in advance. And there is also a balcony upstairs with 20 seats and plenty of standing room for those of you who like to watch from above.
Those of you who have pledged for tickets, please all bring your Pledge receipts with you and ID, and you will be asked to produce it at the venue door.
We’re looking forward to an unusual and fantastic night… and we will be working hard to get it edited and the audio CD mixed, and all the artwork designed, and the entire product created and dispatched to you all as soon as we possibly can…( and if you’re there, you may even be on the DVD when it’s finished ! ).
Please visit: www.thebedford.co.uk/ for more information about the venue.

‘The Big Area’ Tour 2012

‘THE BIG AREA’ TOUR + ‘BEST OF’ ALBUM!
“Going on tour with Then Jerico is like a cross between a commando assault and a Club 18-30 holiday…” ADRIAN THRILLS – NME
Rockers THEN JERICO have announced a reunion tour with all original band members to mark the 25th anniversary of their debut album, First (The Sound Of Music), which is also being digitally re-released by Warner’s on the Rhino Music label, as is their second album, The Big Area.
Mark Shaw (vocals), Steve Wren (drums), Rob Downes (guitar), Jason Stainthorpe (bass) and Scott Taylor (guitar) are re-uniting for eight UK shows, and will perform The Big Area in its entirety, as well as selected tracks from First.
“I’m REALLY excited to be going out on tour with the guys after so many years,” says Mark Shaw. “The songs we will be playing are a big part of our lives, and of other people’s too – it will be great to reconnect with our fans who have been so loyal, and to perform the songs they are dying to hear. The show will be in two parts – the first will feature the singles and some favourites from our first album, the second will be the whole of The Big Area!”
Then Jerico first found fame in 1986 with the release of their debut album, First (The Sound Of Music), which featured hit singles Muscle Deep and The Motive, the latter remaining in the UK Top 40 for three months, and becoming the most-played song on BBC Radio 1 in 1987. The album brought Then Jerico worldwide recognition, and saw them touring with the likes of Iggy Pop, INXS and Propaganda, and the band also headlined The Albert Hall and Hammersmith Odeon many times, as well as packing out huge concert halls across the UK, Japan and Europe.
Their second album, The Big Area, cemented them as one of the biggest acts of the 80s: selling over 100,000 copies in just forty minutes, the album immediately achieved gold status, and went on to reach platinum sales.
In recent years Mark Shaw has enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing four more albums: a solo album, Almost, on EMI, and three more albums as Then Jerico – Orgasmaphobia, and two live albums, Alive & Exposed and Radio Jerico – and has branched out into stage and film acting. Also, as a member of the SAS Band, Mark has performed all around the world alongside Tony Hadley, Paul Young, Fish, and Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen. Mark also headlines the monthly club night The Kitsch Lounge Riot in London’s West End, and is currently in the studio writing new material – Warner’s/Rhino will release a Best Of album later this year.
Tickets available via Ticketweb.co.uk / 0844 477 2000
The album First (The Sound Of Music) will be available on October 1st on Rhino/Warner
